11/2/1016: CHANGE TO HPV (Gardasil) SCHEDULE

A new recommendation has been issued that calls for children starting the HPV series before 15 years to receive only 2 doses 6 months apart.  That recommendation by the CDC has not been formally adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).  Children under 15 have been shown to respond better to the vaccine so only 2 doses are needed for appropriate protection.  Patients receiving the vaccine after 14 years of age are still recommended to receive 3 doses according to the existing schedule.  Once the AAP formally endorses the recommended change, then we will adopt the new schedule.

If your child has received 0 or 1 HPV and is 14 or younger, then plan on receiving the 2nd dose 6 months after the first.

If your child is 14 years or younger and has received 2 HPV doses that ARE NOT at least 6 months apart, then s/he will need another dose that is at least 6 months from the first and 2 months from the 2nd.

If your child is 15 years or older, s/he will receive the original schedule of 0, 2, 6 months.

Feel free to contact your child’s primary physician if you have additional questions.

10/18/2013 – Dr. Carole Parnes Retires

It is with mixed feelings we announce the retirement of Dr. Carole Parnes.

Dr. Parnes opened this Practice in 1981 as a solo practitioner. Over the years as the practice grew, additional providers joined her to create what is now Parnes, May, McKay, Lee, and Associates, L.L.C. Dr. Parnes has been very active in the medical community over the years. Besides serving on several committees at various hospitals she served as President of the Medical Staff of HCGH and as Chairman of the Credentials Committee at HCGH. She was also very active in the Columbia Foundation.

Dr. Parnes is looking forward to being able to spend more time travelling with her husband and more time with her four grandchildren.

We will miss having her as part of our complement of physicians and wish her well as she begins a new chapter in her life.

09/02/2013 – Flu Vaccine

We will begin scheduling appointments for our Saturday flu clinics on Monday, September 9th. Our first flu clinic will be on Saturday, September 21st, and we plan on holding clinics through the end of December. As in previous years, children under 9 years receiving their first flu dose will need a booster at least one month after their initial vaccine dose.

Children who have an egg allergy ARE NOT be eligible to receive the flu vaccine during our Saturday Flu Clinics. If we have written clearance from your allergist indicating your child can receive the vaccine in our office, then you will need to make an appointment during the regular work week, and your child will need to be observed in our office for 30 minutes after the vaccination.

Your child may be eligible to receive the FluMist Nasal Vaccine based on availability and their medical history. We can give the FluMist nasal vaccine to any child 2 and older, who doesn’t have a history of wheezing/asthma, who is not egg allergic, and who is eligible to receive a live vaccine. If a patient does receive the FluMist Nasal Vaccine and requires a booster, please understand that We are unable to reserve a dose of FluMist Nasal Vaccine to use for the booster dose. In the cases where the FluMist Nasal Vaccine is not available, we will give the regular flu shot for the booster dose.

5/31/2013 – New Immunization Requirements

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene now requires that all K-12 students have two doses of the MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccine in order to be admitted to school in the fall.

Also, effective school year 2014-15, two doses of varicella (chickenpox) will be required for admission to kindergarten, and a single dose of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) and meningococcal vaccine will be required for all students entering Grade 7. 8/29/2012 – We have Upgraded to an Electronic Health Record System

As part of the continuous improvement process for the practice, we are now using an electronic health record system. This upgrade is allowing us to provide better medical care for our patients in a more efficient manner. During this time we will need additional time for appointments as our staff learn new processes. This will result in a smaller number of available appointment slots. We understand this can be frustrating, but we ask that you please bear with us as we make this important transition. We will do all we can to accommodate your needs.

2/10/2012 – Schedule Annual Sports Physicals Now

If you have a child who participates in competitive athletics, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Sports Medicine recommends that he or she get a yearly pre-participation physical. These exams focus more on the musculoskeletal system while identifying signs of cardiac disease and asthma and assessing risk factors for joint injury and sudden cardiac death. Some insurance companies do not pay for sports physicals or regular check ups that are less than 12 months apart. Therefore you should verify your insurance benefits and schedule your child’s visit appropriately. If timed correctly, a sports physical can also count as a regular check up. If your child plays a fall sport, then please schedule the sports physical by late spring/early summer in case additional consultations or evaluations are necessary for clearance. Every year there are some athletes who cannot start their fall sport on time because they scheduled their pre-participation evaluation too late in the summer and the appropriate tests and consultations could not be completed in time for start of fall practice in August. Please call our office and select the option for “future appointments” to schedule your child sports physical.

2/10/2012 – Annual Check-ups

In order to do a better job of providing preventive medical care, we are now recommending that all children have an annual check-up also know as a wellness assessment. In the past we had recommended a wellness assessment every two years for those children 6-14 years of age. However, due to the prevalence of problems such as asthma, allergies, childhood obesity, attention-deficit disorder, and family stress, there is a need for proper surveillance and identification of the types of physical and emotional issues facing kids today. An annual wellness assessment allows our physicians to partner with you as parents to identify problems that will require ongoing monitoring or treatment along with ensuring that your child has received all of the appropriate vaccines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics. So, when your child’s birthday comes around, remember to call and schedule him or her for an annual wellness assessment.

12/23/2011 – HPV Vaccine for Males

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most commonly acquired sexually transmitted disease in the U.S. and is the cause of genital warts in males and females. Most males have no symptoms and the infection resolves without treatment, but in females some HPV strains are linked to an increased risk for cervical cancer.

The American Academy of Pediatrics states that Males 9 through 26 years of age may get the HPV vaccine. The HPV vaccine, Gardasil, was recommended to be given to female patients several years ago and our office routinely now offers it to females and males at age 11-12 years onward.
